Workshop for Movements and Music
Seattle, Workshop in June

Arcadia Foundation is hosting a workshop from June 2 through June 7, 2002 in Seattle, Washington. The workshop will offer instruction and the opportunity to explore teaching in both movements and music.

A purpose of the workshop is to further contact among communities working with the ideas of G.I. Gurdjieff. The future of his work in the world is in the hands of individuals and groups that are working today. the event aims to bring people together to share their skills and experience with a specific focus on the Gurdjieff/de Hartmann music and the Gurdjieff Movements.

Thomas de Hartmann and G.I. Gurdjieff set standards for the music that require not only technical proficiency but specific instruction unique to playing their music. the workshop will include individual instruction in playing the piano for Movements classes. Participants are encouraged to bring their musical instruments, as the workshop will explore new arrangements of the Movements music for multiple instruments, a task begun many years ago by de Hartmann.

Since the Gurdjieff Movements are appearing with greater frequency on seminar flyers and websites it seems very important that our greater Work community strive to maintain close communications. There are many issues to consider as the Movements and the music become more "public" such as the aim, accuracy and quality of the Movements that are being taught. The workshop will provide teachers a venue to share experience and to explore new ways of teaching. Finally the future manifestation of the Gurdjieff Work (i.e.-Movements, music, books) will be a focus of inquiry. How can the integrity of Gurdjieff's legacy be assured while nurturing a more public expression of Gurdjieff's ideas?
